Matcha Green Tea Powder, an Antioxidant Powerhouse

I am a big fan of Matcha Green Tea, not only for its taste, but for its health benefits as well. Matcha tea is not your ‘regular’ green tea that is in bags that you put in boiling water and make a glass of light green water. Matcha tea is to regular green tea like pro-level mixed martial arts is to high-school wrestling. Matcha tea IS green tea, only it’s a special type of green tea in which the tea leaves are powdered, whisked with water to a froth, and drank without discarding the leaves. It is often beautiful jade or emerald in color and has a unique flavor. Even though green tea is a regular drink in Japan, Matcha was elevated to a ceremonial drink thousands of years ago because of its unique properties. The Japanese Zen ‘Tea Ceremony’ has always traditionally been done using Matcha Tea, it fact, the tea ceremony was invented BECAUSE of the Japanese reverence for Matcha Tea. Fortunately, like many things that were once luxury items, Matcha green tea can be an affordable daily drink. It’s so mainstream that it is even available at Starbucks as a hot or cold latte. While purists would likely disagree, a quick blend in a blender is an excellent and quick substitute for the traditional bamboo whisk used to froth the beverage with hot water.

Matcha Green Tea for Antioxidants

Kiss Me Organics Matcha Green Tea Not only that, but Matcha green tea is an excellent source of antioxidants. It is estimated that Matcha contains ten times to one hundred times as many antioxidants as a cup of green tea. Green tea contains far more antioxidants than a cup of coffee, so switching from coffee to tea could be very beneficial in the long run. It might also be better for your teeth, as I point out in my post on Matcha Tea and Dental Health . Matcha also contains an amino acid called L-Theanine. While Matcha does contain caffeine, often a similar amount to brewed coffee, Matcha tea doesn’t give the same energy high, racing heart, and anxiety that caffeine often does to some people because L-Theanine is an amino acid that leads to relaxation that counterbalances the negative effects of the caffeine stimulant. The effect is a calm awake and alert sensation that caused Zen Buddhist monks to use Matcha as a way to stay alert while meditating for long periods of time. Those that find caffeine too stimulating may find that they appreciate the calm stimulation of Matcha. I personally have switched from coffee to Matcha on most days and love my Matcha whipped up in the blender with a little heavy cream to create a creamy smooth latte-like drink.

Matcha Tea Review

This review focuses on a Kiss Me Organics, Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder. This is their ‘culinary’ grade powder that can be used for drinking and also for baking. They also have a ‘Ceremonial Grade’ Matcha, that I hope to be able to try in the near future and compare to this tea. Culinary grade would be a lower grade tea than the Ceremonial Grade, so a comparison could be interesting.



I ordered the Matcha through Amazon, and since they have their tea shipped through Amazon Fulfillment, I got it within 2 to 3 days. Interestingly, the packaging ‘warns’ you of the strong scent that the tea will exude when you open the package, which, they humorously claim ‘is the antioxidants talking to you’. Cute. Living up to the expectations created for me, upon opening the bag, an incredibly strong grassy smell wafted up to me. If you have ever had freshly made wheatgrass juice, the smell was very similar to this intense grassiness. Unfortunately, I took wheatgrass juice regularly for a period of months and developed an aversion to it, so the pungent grassy scent reminded me strongly of this aversion.

The next morning, I began the taste test comparison against DoMatcha Organic 2nd Harvest Matcha. I would be tasting both of these with two friends who were ‘Matcha Virgins’ who have had green tea, but have never had Matcha. So, I brewed both teas the exact same way with:

Kiss Me Organics Matcha Green Tea

  • One cup of near boiling water
  • 1 level tsp of Matcha
  • 1 level tsp of sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons heavy cream

I blended each tea up in the blender for a few seconds to a creamy froth and poured us each a cup of each of the teas. At one point, I could not remember which tea I had put in which cup, but the intense grassy smell of the Kiss Me Organics Matcha left no doubt which one was which, since the Do Matcha green tea has a much lighter and more floral nose. Both scents continued to permeate the teas after blending, which is lovely. The color of the teas was distinct, with the Kiss Me Organics Matcha having a slightly khaki color as opposed to the deeper jade color of the Do Matcha.

The tasting notes on the Kiss Me Organics were very interesting. One of the tasters is a horticulturalist and, of course, he appreciated the grassy nose and grassier taste of the Kiss Me, as opposed to the more floral notes of the nose of the Do Matcha. All three of us found the Kiss Me to be ‘bitey’ and slightly more bitter in comparison to the smoother Do Matcha, but all of us agreed this was not ‘bitey’ in a bad way, but only in more of a way that one person might like a bolder coffee over a smoother one, or a more bitter chocolate over milk chocolate. It was not a flaw, but rather just an observation of a note that might be a personal preference. Two of the tasters felt that this sharper quality gave it more ‘substance’ than the smoothness of the Do Matcha.

Interestingly, both my friends felt that they liked the Kiss Me Organics Matcha as a better choice for ‘everyday drinking’, and one of them and myself both felt that the Do Matcha was better for ‘sipping’ and savoring it. So, the Kiss Me Organics Matcha Green Tea got a thumbs up from all of us tasters, who all found it enjoyable. I almost certainly would have liked it more had I not had a previous aversion to wheatgrass juice, which I believe interfered with my enjoyment of it to some degree.



So, Kiss Me Organics was the preferred Matcha of two of the three of us, with me being the third, liking it just slightly less. The Kiss Me Matcha comes in a 4 oz bag and the cost is $49.77 on Amazon at the time of this writing, making it $12.44 an ounce. The Do Matcha comes in an 2.82 gram tin and the cost on Amazon is $34.02 at the time of writing. This equates to $11.34 per ounce. This makes the DoMatcha a somewhat better deal.

In short, I’m glad that three of us tasted it so that I could get a more varied opinion of the Matchas since the scent of the Kiss Me threw me off just a bit. In short, I can confidently recommend both Kiss Me Organic Matcha and Do Matcha 2nd Harvest as excellent drinking Matchas. What is even more impressive is that two friends who had never had Matcha before both enjoyed this ancient Japanese drink. I will certainly continue my daily dose of Matcha in place of coffee on most days. After drinking Matcha for some time, one day I simply found that I no longer was drinking coffee anymore. As a coffee lover, I found this quite surprising. As a bonus, I’m getting far more antioxidants in my daily cup of Matcha than in a daily cup of Joe.
